As is the case with most industrialized countries with large economies and manufacturing operations, China has in place a thorough classification system known as the China Industry Classification system. It groups companies into similar industry categories based on the type of business and their business activities. It’s used to collect statistics and data on organizations and companies throughout Mainland China. Currently, the China Industry Classification system includes 95 different industry categories. (Corollary systems include the United Nations’ International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities and the North American Industry Classification System as used in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.)

The Chinese system is based on standard number GB/T 4754, the industrial classification for national economic activities. There are three levels in the system as defined by the National Bureau of Statistics of China.
